How to Get and Maintain Your Whitest Teeth
If you want whiter teeth, you’re not alone. A recent survey found that 80% of adult Americans want whiter teeth. But having your teeth whitened is really only half the battle. You’ll still need to take some extra steps to maintain your newly whitened teeth!
Dr. Valerie M. Preston and our team at VP Dental are here to bring you the latest in cosmetic enhancement options. That’s why we’ve compiled this helpful guide to why Invisalign may be the best treatment option for you.
How we whiten teeth
At our office, we use a couple of different whitening techniques. You can choose between an in-office whitening treatment or a kit that you can complete at home. Both treatment options are safe and designed with your comfort in mind.
With in-office whitening, we apply whitening chemicals to your teeth. Then we use a UV light to increase the potency of the chemicals. The advantage of in-office whitening is that the treatment can whiten your teeth by seven shades in only an hour.
With at-home whitening, you use a bleaching agent which is applied with a teeth whitening tray custom made to fit your teeth. That said, at-home treatments can take a couple of weeks to achieve the results that you want.
How to maintain your results
While whitening works quite well, your teeth can become stained if you don’t take proper care to maintain your results. Here are a few simple tips to keep your teeth at their whitest and to help maintain your results.
Avoid staining foods
You’ll want to avoid foods and drinks that can stain your teeth. Stay away from too much coffee and tea, or switch to iced so you can drink your beverages with a straw. Limit dark-colored sauces, like tomato, soy, and barbecue.
Maintain proper oral hygiene
This means you’ll want to floss your teeth once a day and brush your teeth twice a day. Be sure to maintain regular dental appointments, once every six months, so we can catch any cavities and problems with your teeth early.
Use a whitening toothpaste
You may want to use a whitening toothpaste to maintain your new, bright smile. This may not be a good option for you but, if your teeth are sensitive or your enamel is worn.
Touch up treatments
Touch up treatments are a great long term option for maintaining your whitening results. You can either schedule treatments every six months or repeat the treatment every year. This is also a good option if you’re a regular smoker or you drink a lot of coffee.
