Meet Dr. Valerie Preston of VP Dental, the dedicated owner dentist in Raleigh, NC. For 25 years, she’s been making smiles shine brighter and lives better. It all started with an interesting twist: a childhood dental accident became a lifelong passion for oral care.
Intrigued by the artistry and kindness of her childhood dentist, she knew as an 8-year-old that dentistry was her calling. Dr. Preston took the road less traveled by starting her practice from scratch in 2000 after gaining valuable experience as both a dental assistant and hygienist. Having worked for numerous dentists with different styles, she was determined to practice dentistry in a manner that was unlike most — very focused and individualized to each and every patient, committed to her patients for the long haul, and dedicated to each patient’s overall health and well-being.
Her record speaks for itself as she has maintained the majority of her patient base since the beginning and is now taking care of the next generation! Dentistry is her true calling where she is able to combine her passion for health and proper function with her artistic talent and eye for creativity and beauty, so much so she feels she has never truly “worked” a day in her life.
Armed with a BS in Dental Hygiene from Ohio State University and a DDS from the University of Maryland at Baltimore, she’s as knowledgeable as she is compassionate.
Aside from her dental qualifications, she’s earned numerous accolades over the years. She has presided as President of the Women’s Dental Association, she is a Fellow of the International College of Dental Implantology, and is a 20+ year active member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and a Gold Plus Invisalign® Provider, amongst others.
But what really gets her going? It’s working with anxious or overwhelmed patients. Her holistic approach to dentistry aims to improve whole-body health, beginning with a great and functional smile.

She’s also heavily involved in community service at home and overseas, from Raleigh to Ecuador, channeling her expertise where it’s most needed. Her dental philosophy is straight-up sensible: tackle dental issues quickly and early, especially issues related to the bite. She believes that timely intervention can avoid a lot of dental pain and heavy costs down the road.
When she’s not in the office or out in the mission field, you’ll likely find her enjoying the great outdoors with her husband, Mike, of 35 years and their 5 adult children (one will soon be a dentist practicing with mom!) Whether it’s boating, biking, or skiing, she loves quality time with her family. She is also an avid fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes where she and her husband (as well as one daughter) are proud alumni.
