Dental implant surgery can transform your smile’s look, overall health, feel, and function.
Dr. Valerie M. Preston, DDS, PA, at VP Dental, provides beautiful dental implants that blend seamlessly to match your natural teeth.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are composed of titanium artificial tooth roots and porcelain or ceramic artificial teeth. The titanium rods are surgically inserted into the jaw as artificial roots, providing a permanent base for replacement teeth. Compared to crowns, bridges, and dentures, dental implant procedures are a popular long-term solution for missing teeth or chronic dental problems such as periodontal disease.
Dental implants are the new standard in tooth replacement because they fit and function like natural teeth. They are easier to care for and better looking than removable dentures, helping you feel like your teeth are back again and making it easier to chew and speak.
Why Choose Dental Implants?
- Durable and Permanent – With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime, making them one of the most cost-effective restoration solutions.
- Maintain Oral Health – Dental implants help prevent bone loss, preserve the jawbone, and maintain the shape of the face.
- Natural and Comfortable – Dental implants look, feel, and function like natural teeth. You can eat, smile, and socialize without worrying about your teeth.
Our Implant Services
Single Tooth Replacement
Losing a single tooth can impact your oral health and appearance. Dr. Preston can replace your missing tooth with a dental implant that looks and functions like your natural tooth.
Multiple Teeth Replacement
Whether you’re missing several teeth due to injury, disease, or decay, Dr. Preston can restore your smile using implant-supported bridges or partial dentures.
Full Arch Replacement
If you’re missing all your teeth on the upper or lower jaw, we offer implant-supported full bridges or dentures. These restorations are more comfortable and stable than conventional dentures, allowing you to retain a more natural biting and chewing capacity.
Bone Grafting for Implants
We offer bone grafting procedures for patients who lack enough bone density in their jaws to support dental implants. This process helps to create a more solid base for the implant, increasing the chances of successful implant placement.
The Implants Procedure
- Initial Consultation and Evaluation – Dr. Preston will evaluate your oral health, discuss your dental needs and preferences, and determine whether you’re a suitable candidate for dental implants.
- Custom Treatment Planning – We will create a personalized treatment plan that outlines the steps needed to restore your smile with dental implants.
- Implant Placement – The implant, made from biocompatible titanium, is surgically placed into the jawbone.
- Healing and Integration – Over several months, the implant fuses with the bone in a process called osseointegration. Once the implant has integrated with the jawbone, we’ll attach an abutment and a custom–made crown to it.
- Follow–up Care – Regular check-ups and proper oral hygiene will ensure the success and longevity of your dental implants.
How are dental implants placed?
Dr. Preston can help determine if you are a candidate for dental implants by reviewing your dental and medical history with you and examining your teeth. If she feels you are a good candidate for tooth implants, you can begin the three-step process to place dental implants, which are:
- The implant or placement – A screw used as the artificial root for your new teeth permanently fuses to your jaw.
- The abutment – A connector that holds a tooth to the implant.
- The crown (prosthetic tooth) – The artificial tooth is made of zirconium or porcelain for durability.
First, Dr. Preston will numb your mouth with local anesthesia or give an IV sedation so there is no pain or discomfort. She then removes any damaged teeth and implants the titanium posts (artificial roots) into your jaw bone through an incision in your gums. Once planted, Dr. Preston closes the gums over the implant.
Now, your mouth needs several weeks or months to heal completely. Over time, your jawbone grows around the small posts, holding them in place. This bone growth bonding process is called osseointegration. While your mouth heals, you may use a temporary crown to help you eat and speak normally until the restoration process is complete. You will likely be sent home with pain medications to help with the discomfort.
An abutment is attached to the implant post when the implant fully fuses with the jawbone. The abutment is the metal part that serves as a base for the crown. It connects to your jawbone, while the crown fits on the other end. The abutment rises slightly above the gum line to support the crown. When Dr. Preston determines your jaw has healed, she’ll make a mold of your mouth. This mold is to custom-make your artificial teeth to match your existing teeth.
Finally, when your new teeth arrive, Dr. Preston places them securely onto the abutment. Once in place, your new teeth should instantly feel comfortable and natural. Dental implants can replace one or multiple teeth or complete a new upper and lower teeth set.
